Türkiye’s national flag carrier, Turkish Airlines, is set to significantly boost its fleet with a substantial order of 225 new aircraft from Boeing. This major expansion highlights the airline’s commitment to enhancing its global reach and capacity.
The airline officially informed the Istanbul Stock Exchange about its strategic decision. The new additions include 75 advanced Boeing B787-9 and B787-10 models, known for their fuel efficiency and suitability for long-haul international routes. In addition, Turkish Airlines has finalized negotiations with Boeing for 150 737-8/10MAX aircraft, comprising 100 confirmed orders and 50 optional ones. The finalization of the 737 MAX order is pending successful discussions with CFM International regarding engine supply.
This massive announcement follows a high-profile meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington. This timing suggests potential diplomatic and economic factors influencing the deal, particularly given recent developments in U.S.-Turkish relations.
The B787-9 and B787-10 aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2034. Alongside the aircraft procurement, Turkish Airlines is also in discussions with leading engine manufacturers, Rolls-Royce and GE Aerospace, for the necessary engines, spare parts, and comprehensive maintenance services.
Notably, the agreement comes shortly after discussions where Mr. Trump indicated a possible lifting of the U.S. ban on advanced fighter jet sales to Türkiye. This ban was imposed in 2019 during his first term, following Ankara’s acquisition of a Russian-made air defense system, and its potential reversal could signal improving bilateral ties.
