Director Imtiaz Ali’s critically acclaimed film, Amar Singh Chamkila, continues to shine a year and a half after its release, earning multiple nominations at the prestigious International Emmy Awards. Diljit Dosanjh has been recognized for Best Performance by an Actor, and the film itself is nominated in the TV Movie/Mini-Series category. Speaking exclusively to HT City, Ali shared his joy and reflections on this significant achievement.
“In the excitement of these nominations at the International Emmy Awards, the first name that comes to mind is ‘Chamkila’ himself,” Ali stated. “He lived a life that we could translate into a film, experiencing the highs and lows of a difficult period in Punjab. He and Amarjot, portrayed by Parineeti Chopra, truly embody the spirit and complexities of Punjab, living the story of the land as its own children.”
Ali also expressed his sincere thanks to Netflix for their crucial support, especially during the film’s challenging financial stages. “Netflix stepped in when we faced difficulties and invested in the project, making the film a reality,” he said.
Praising his lead actor, Ali added, “The film simply would not have been possible without Diljit Dosanjh. He brought immense value and shaped the film into what it is. I’m thrilled that he’s nominated for Best Actor.” He concluded by expressing his gratitude to the entire team, including A.R. Rahman, Irshad Kamil, Parineeti Chopra, and all the crew members who contributed to Amar Singh Chamkila. “I am forever indebted to Punjab and its people for allowing me to be a part of their stories,” he shared, also giving special mention to his brother Sajid Ali for co-writing the screenplay, Jassi for research support, and editor Aarti for her contributions.
