Star Wars actor John Boyega has openly discussed how Disney’s sequel trilogy might have unfolded if he had been given a producer role, suggesting a dramatically different direction for the beloved saga.
Speaking at Florida Supercon 2025, Boyega revealed to Popverse that fans “would have had a completely different thing” under his creative influence. He highlighted his disagreement with the fates of original heroes, Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, who were both killed off in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, respectively.
“First of all, we’re not getting rid of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, all these people,” Boyega asserted. “We’re not doing that. The first thing we’re going to do is fulfill their story, fulfill their legacy. We’re going to make a good moment of handing on the baton.” While this sentiment clearly contrasts with the films’ narrative choices, it’s worth noting that Harrison Ford had previously expressed a long-standing desire for Han Solo to die to give his character a definitive, impactful end. Boyega did not elaborate on how Han’s storyline might have evolved otherwise.
Boyega also touched upon the portrayal of the new generation of characters. He stated, “Our new characters will not be overpowered in these movies. They won’t just grab stuff and know what to do with it. No. You’ve got to struggle like every other character in this franchise. I’d do that.” This critique likely addresses fan discussions about Rey’s swift mastery of Force abilities in The Force Awakens, especially when compared to Finn’s more gradual, hinted Force sensitivity throughout the trilogy.
Furthermore, Boyega expressed a desire to delve into other areas of the Star Wars canon for inspiration. “I’d look to the Old Republic stories, and see what we can add to the continuation of that,” he mentioned, also referencing the classic Xbox 360-era video games. “I would definitely want to see Force Unleashed stories in there. I would try to expand the Star Wars universe as much as possible while respecting the lore. If we’re expanding the lore, we have to do it in within the respective boundaries that stay true.”
His strongest conviction remained with Luke Skywalker: “But Luke Skywalker wouldn’t be disappearing on a rock,” he concluded. “Hell no. Standing there and he’s, like, a projector? I would want to give those characters way more, way more.”
In related news for Star Wars enthusiasts, the franchise is set to return to theaters next year with The Mandalorian and Grogu. A new trailer for the film recently dropped, featuring notable appearances by Sigourney Weaver, a live-action Zeb, and a redesigned Razor Crest.
