A breakthrough in DNA and fingerprint technology has led to a guilty plea from a 61-year-old man in Sydney for a string of sexual assaults committed in the early 1990s. The individual, known in media reports at the time as the ‘Night Stalker’ or ‘Moore Park Rapist,’ has admitted to over a dozen charges, including 11 counts of aggravated sexual assault with a weapon as a threat, related to attacks on eight women between 1991 and 1993.
Arrested at Sydney International Airport last February, the man’s identity was initially suppressed but later lifted. He appeared in Downing Centre Local Court via video link and pleaded guilty to 13 of the 36 charges he faced. The remaining charges, including indecent assault and detaining a person for advantage, will be considered during his sentencing next month. One of the victims was present remotely for the court proceedings.
Reports from 1993 indicated that the attacker frequently targeted Asian women, aged between 17 and 45. He was known to speak some Cantonese and often preyed on victims near train stations, using the guise of offering fake jobs. The attacks, typically occurring at night, were often carried out at knifepoint, with incidents reported in areas such as Strathfield and Moore Park.
