Sony has unveiled a new initiative called ‘Franchise Rewards,’ a program that allows players to purchase exclusive physical PlayStation merchandise once they’ve unlocked specific in-game trophies. However, this new scheme comes with a catch: players still have to pay for the items.
The program is kicking off with ‘Ghost Rewards,’ tied to the acclaimed title, Ghost of Tsushima. To participate, players must earn certain trophies in the game before December 31, 2025.
For instance, earning the ‘Mono no Aware’ Gold trophy grants players the opportunity to buy a commemorative T-shirt for $30/€33. Those who go a step further and achieve the ‘Living Legend’ Platinum trophy can also purchase a special commemorative pin for $25/€28. On top of these prices, shipping fees apply, with standard delivery within the U.S. costing around $13, and expedited options priced at approximately $25.
This announcement has sparked considerable debate among fans, many of whom view it as a disappointing downgrade from the recently discontinued PlayStation Stars loyalty program. PlayStation Stars previously offered actual points for purchases, which could be redeemed for free games or store credit.
A video showcasing official features for Ghost of Yotei was also presented.
One frustrated fan remarked on social media, “We went from getting points to buy more games for free, to getting points that give us the honor of giving them more money. Thanks guys.” Another echoed this sentiment, stating, “We lost PlayStation Stars for this? Bruh. Give the PS Store cards back.”
Images showed the Ghost of Tsushima T-shirt, available for $30 with the “Mono No Aware” Gold trophy, and a commemorative pin, available for $25 with the “Living Legend” Platinum trophy.
Comparisons have also been drawn to Bungie’s long-standing model of offering exclusive Destiny merchandise to players who complete specific in-game achievements. As one commenter put it, this feels like the “Play to pay” method, rather than a genuine reward system.
Players interested in these limited-time offers for Ghost of Tsushima merchandise must make their purchases before December 31, 2025. PlayStation has also confirmed that the Franchise Rewards scheme will continue with its next iteration for the upcoming title, Ghost of Yotei, with more details to be unveiled later this year.
