During the recent ‘Beyond the Strand’ presentation, fans got their first exciting glimpse of the upcoming Death Stranding anime. Set within Hideo Kojima’s iconic world of devastating extinction events and dangerous Timefall, the anime, currently titled Death Stranding: Mosquito, revealed a teaser trailer packed with brutal combat and stunning, stylized animation.
True to Death Stranding‘s enigmatic style, the trailer presented more mysteries than solutions. It hinted that two characters, one seemingly resembling the game’s protagonist Sam Porter Bridges, are Repatriates. These individuals are effectively immortal, able to return from the dead by reconnecting their soul to their physical body through the mysterious ‘Seam’ dimension.
The film clearly draws deep inspiration from its video game roots. The intense brawl takes place amidst a torrent of Timefall, and one character sports a mask with a peculiar mosquito-like proboscis, seemingly crafted from the tar-like material associated with Beached Things. Adding to the eerie atmosphere, a BT-like dog with hands for a face also makes an appearance. There’s no doubt—this is unequivocally a Death Stranding experience.
Confirmed details about the project include Hiroshi Miyamoto (of ABC Animation Studio) as the director, working from a script penned by Aaron Guzikowski, known for his work on Raised by Wolves.
The presentation also touched upon the Death Stranding live-action film. Directed by Michael Sarnoski (A Quiet Place: Day One), this adaptation will feature an original story with new characters. Sarnoski shared his ambition to ‘capture the soul’ of the games, promising an exploration of the Death Stranding world across both ‘micro and macro’ perspectives.
