Navratri Day 2: Honoring Maa Brahmacharini, the Ascetic Form of Durga

September 23, 2025
in Social Viral
Reading Time: 3 min

As the festive spirit of Navratri unfolds, the second day is devoted to the veneration of Maa Brahmacharini, the second of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Her narrative is a profound tale of steadfast devotion and inner purity.

The legend tells of Parvati, who, in her youth, was deeply committed to marrying Lord Shiva. However, Shiva remained immersed in his profound meditation, seemingly indifferent to her affection. Undeterred by societal discouragement, Parvati embarked on an arduous spiritual penance, a period of austerity lasting approximately 5,000 years. As the malevolent demon Tarakasura grew in power, the gods sought the intervention of Kamadeva, the god of love, hoping to stir desire in Shiva’s heart for Parvati. Their plan, however, met with disastrous consequences, yet Parvati’s resolve remained unshaken, her devotion unwavering.

During this intense period of devotion, Lord Shiva, in disguise, approached Parvati, attempting to dissuade her by highlighting his own perceived imperfections. Parvati, however, remained steadfast, her spiritual discipline unyielding. With the divine support of Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati, she even repelled an attack from the demon Prakandasura and his forces.

Eventually, Shiva reappeared, this time as a mendicant (Brahmachari). He tested Parvati with a series of challenging riddles, all of which she answered with remarkable grace and wisdom. Deeply impressed by her intellect and spiritual fortitude, Shiva finally proposed marriage. Overjoyed, Parvati accepted, marking the culmination of her long and devoted penance.

On a spiritual level, Maa Brahmacharini is associated with the ‘Svadhishthana chakra,’ or the sacral chakra, believed to be the seat of creativity and deep self-awareness.

Ways to Honor Maa Brahmacharini

To honor Maa Brahmacharini, consider incorporating the color red into your attire today. You can also chant the mantras:

‘Oṃ Devī Brahmacāriṇyai Namaḥ’ and:

‘Dadhana kara Padmabhyam akshamala kamandalu।
Devi prasidathu mayi brahmacharinya-uttama॥
Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Brahmacharini Rupena Samsthita।
Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah‘,

accompanied by an offering of sugar, to seek her blessings.

Shubh Navratri!
