Notre Dame Cathedral’s Iconic Towers Reopen Six Years After Devastating Fire

September 20, 2025

Reading Time: 22 min

The historic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris has taken a significant step towards its full recovery, with its iconic Medieval towers now open to the public once more. This milestone comes six years after a catastrophic fire in 2019 devastated large sections of the landmark, necessitating its closure and a massive, multi-year restoration effort.

While the main body of the cathedral welcomed visitors back in December 2024, the reopening of its twin towers has been a more prolonged process. The extensive restoration work has been crucial in bringing the centuries-old structure back to its former glory after the extensive damage caused by the 2019 blaze.

French President Emmanuel Macron officially reopened the meticulously restored towers on Friday, allowing visitors to once again experience this significant aspect of Notre Dame’s grandeur. The video accompanying this report was edited by Emaan Warraich and Jack Burgess.
