The nation is in mourning following the untimely death of Assamese singing sensation Zubeen Garg, who passed away yesterday in Singapore. Known for bringing Assamese music to the national stage, Zubeen Garg’s iconic song ‘Ya Ali’ from the 2006 film ‘Gangster’ remains a fan favorite.
Adding to the sorrow, a poignant video has gone viral online, capturing Zubeen Garg’s last known moments. The footage shows him adjusting his life jacket before entering the water for a swim. Tragically, he began to feel unwell during this activity, was quickly rescued, and rushed to intensive care. Despite all efforts to save him, Zubeen Garg passed away shortly thereafter.
Condolences have flooded in from prominent figures. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his shock on X, stating, “Shocked by the sudden demise of popular singer Zubeen Garg. He will be remembered for his rich contribution to music.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also paid tribute on X, sharing his grief: “Today, Assam lost one of its favourite sons. I am at a loss for words to describe what Zubeen meant for Assam. He has gone too early, this was not an age to go”.
Zubeen Garg was in Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival. The festival organizers shared the devastating news, revealing in a statement: “With profound grief, we share the heartbreaking news that our beloved icon, Zubeen Garg, passed away today at Singapore General Hospital around 2:30 PM. Zubeen had arrived in Singapore just the day before yesterday. He was scheduled to be with us at the festival tomorrow… We later learned that a few members of the local Assamese community had taken him on a yacht visit, of which we had no prior knowledge”.
His passing is a profound loss to the music world. May he rest in peace.
