Comedian Vir Das has hilariously dissected the concept of ‘cancel culture,’ drawing a sharp contrast between its manifestation in India and the West. In a recent stand-up performance, a snippet of which he shared on Instagram, Das humorously pointed out that while Western comics might face online backlash, his Indian counterparts often grapple with more tangible consequences.
“Please don’t cancel me, I apologise! It would really interfere with my incarceration,” Das quipped on stage, mimicking a Western comic’s apprehension about being ‘canceled.’ He then elaborated on the difference: “I was with an American comic. He is like, ‘Vir, cancel culture is insane! The other day a mob came after me. A mob on Twitter!'”
Das then used a vivid analogy to illustrate the disparity. “It’s like telling the freshly castrated that your balls itch!” he exclaimed, before directly addressing criticism about Indian comedy not pushing boundaries. “Because we looked inside the envelope! There are court cases inside the envelope. There is a court date on top of the envelope.”
The comedian’s remarks likely touch upon his own experiences. In 2021, Das faced significant backlash and a police complaint in India for his ‘Two Indias’ monologue, which addressed issues like women’s safety, Covid-19, pollution, and farmer protests. His Netflix series ‘Hasmukh’ also faced a legal challenge for allegedly maligning the legal profession.
Das’s latest stand-up special, ‘Fool Volume,’ was released on Netflix on July 18.
