Dr. Haris Chirackal, a well-known whistleblower from Kerala and Head of the Urology Department at the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, has publicly criticized the Malayalam film ‘Hridayapoorvam’ for its alleged medical inaccuracies. Dr. Chirackal took to his Facebook page to express his disappointment, particularly regarding the film’s depiction of organ transplantation.
He stated that the movie sensationalizes serious medical subjects like organ transplants without proper understanding, reducing critical aspects to mere jokes. Dr. Chirackal highlighted that the film fails to convey the crucial post-transplant care required by patients, which often involves avoiding contact with others and being cautious about infections, especially from animals. He emphasized that such procedures are not lighthearted matters and that comedy has no place in depicting the realities faced by transplant recipients.
The doctor further pointed out the film’s misrepresentation of the heart, which he clarified is merely an organ that pumps blood and does not possess ‘feelings’ as suggested in the movie. He concluded his post by expressing concern that such distortions in scientific representation can negatively impact public awareness and the credibility of cinema.
Despite his critique of the film’s medical content, Dr. Chirackal clarified that he holds no ill will towards the movie or its cast and crew, whom he praised for their performances. He specifically mentioned director Sathyan Anthikad and lead actor Mohanlal as favorites.
Meanwhile, ‘Hridayapoorvam,’ a romantic comedy-drama directed by Sathyan Anthikad, which also features Malavika Mohanan and Sangeeth Prathap, had a successful theatrical run. It grossed approximately ₹72 crore worldwide. The film is scheduled to be released on the OTT platform JioHotstar on September 26.
