New Delhi – Tamil Nadu is at the forefront of integrating industry expertise into higher education by hiring the most ‘Professors of Practice’ (PoPs). Following closely behind are Maharashtra and Gujarat, as indicated by the latest data from the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Professors of practice are distinguished professionals and industry experts appointed by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Their primary role is to impart real-world knowledge, mentor students, and help bridge the crucial gap between academic learning and industry demands.

The UGC released specific guidelines in 2022 to facilitate the hiring of PoPs, aiming to infuse classrooms with practical acumen. These positions are temporary and are designed not to replace existing sanctioned posts. To qualify, candidates need a minimum of 15 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in senior roles.

The UGC data reveals that across 349 HEIs, 1,841 PoPs have been appointed so far, with Tamil Nadu accounting for the largest share. Maharashtra has hired 193 PoPs, while Gujarat and Karnataka have appointed 179 and 170 professionals, respectively.

Notably, private universities are leading this trend of integrating industry professionals into the academic workforce, whereas central universities have, so far, hired only 15 PoPs. Deemed-to-be universities have made significant strides with 699 appointments, followed by private universities with 715. State universities have added 212 PoPs, and colleges have employed 200 professionals.

Considering that India’s higher education system comprises 56 central, 460 state, 128 deemed-to-be, and 510 private universities, along with over 45,000 colleges, the limited adoption of PoP appointments by central universities is noteworthy.

A senior UGC official commented on the initiative: “To bring in distinguished experts from various fields like engineering, science, technology, and entrepreneurship, and to develop courses and curricula that meet industry and societal needs, we have adopted the concept of a Professor of Practice. This also aims to provide students with exposure and mentorship from domain experts.”

He further clarified the terms of service: “The maximum tenure for a Professor of Practice at an institution should not exceed three years, though it can be extended by one year in exceptional circumstances. However, the total service should not exceed four years under any condition.”

The official also highlighted that the PoP scheme offers a valuable opportunity for individuals in leadership positions across various sectors to contribute on an honorary basis, thereby giving back to society and supporting nation-building efforts.
