Ever thought sports commentators on TV broadcasts could get a bit over the top? Well, their wildest moments are tame compared to some incredible voice lines recently discovered for the classic video game, MLB Slugfest 2003.
Imagine this: during a game, a fictional announcer casually remarks, “Enjoying some smoked whale meat up in the booth today. I don’t really care for it, but I can’t stop eating it.” Yes, you read that right. Whale meat.
But it gets even crazier. Other lines found mention players getting intoxicated, commentators contemplating walking into traffic, audio engineers being electrocuted, and even chilling references to families being murdered. It’s truly some of the most bizarre and inappropriate material imaginable for a sports game.
These astonishing recordings were brought to light by the Video Game History Foundation. They stumbled upon a CD in their archives containing dozens of these unused voice lines, all of which were, unsurprisingly, rejected by Major League Baseball before the game’s release.
A post shared by the Foundation perfectly summed it up: “Still need more baseball? We found a CD in our archives containing dozens of unused voice lines from MLB Slugfest 2003 rejected by the MLB. Here’s some of our favorites.”
It’s crystal clear why the MLB would never want any association with such wildly inappropriate content, even within the context of a video game. One particularly dark snippet had a caster saying, “A lot of families at the ballpark. You know Tim, that’s good because my family was murdered.” These lines offer a fascinating, albeit disturbing, peek into the creative process and the boundaries that were clearly pushed.
