In a move that has sparked significant controversy, Rockstar Games, the studio behind the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, has reportedly terminated between 30 and 40 employees. The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) quickly responded, characterizing these dismissals as “blatant and ruthless union busting.”
Reports indicate that the affected individuals were UK and Canadian staff who were actively participating in a private trade union chat group on Discord. Many were already union members or in the process of organizing efforts within Rockstar. The IWGB’s press release explicitly states that these employees were fired specifically because of their involvement in union activities.
“Rockstar has just carried out the most blatant and ruthless act of union busting in the history of the games industry. This flagrant contempt for the law and for the lives of the workers who bring in their billions is an insult to their fans and the global industry. Despite this calculated attack on workers organizing for a collective voice and to improve their difficult working conditions, the Rockstar Union remains undeterred. They will keep organizing for respect and better conditions whilst continuing to pour their blood, sweat and creativity into games that are loved by millions. The IWGB will pursue every legal claim possible to ensure our members are reinstated and receive interim relief.”
In direct opposition to the union’s claims, publisher Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, released a statement through a spokesperson. They asserted that the firings were solely due to “gross misconduct” and for no other reason.
“We strive to make the world’s best entertainment properties by giving our best-in-class creative teams positive work environments and ongoing career opportunities. Our culture is focused on teamwork, excellence, and kindness. Rockstar Games terminated a small number of individuals for gross misconduct, and for no other reason. As always, we fully support Rockstar’s ambitions and approach.”
These controversial dismissals come at a critical time for Rockstar, as Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for release next May. Industry analysts widely expect the game to be a colossal success, with projections suggesting over $3 billion in its first year alone, and many consider it among the most significant game releases ever.
Despite immense public anticipation, Rockstar has maintained a tight lid on Grand Theft Auto VI’s details. However, following a significant leak of the game’s development build in 2022 and the early release of its first trailer a year later, the studio has intensified its security measures. Last year, Rockstar mandated a five-day-a-week in-office policy for employees, citing needs for enhanced productivity and security. This move was met with strong criticism from workers linked to the IWGB, who claimed Rockstar had gone back on earlier commitments and was unwilling to discuss the matter with its workforce.
