Air India Crash Sole Survivor: ‘I’m the Luckiest Man Alive, But Also Suffering’

Viswashkumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of a devastating Air India plane crash, has shared his personal struggle, describing himself as both the “luckiest man alive” and someone who is “suffering” due to the ordeal. The crash, which claimed 241 lives, saw Mr. Ramesh miraculously walk away from the wreckage with seemingly minor injuries. However, he revealed the deep emotional and physical pain he continues to endure. His younger brother, Ajay, who was also on the flight, perished in the accident.

Since returning to his home in Leicester, Mr. Ramesh has been battling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and has found it difficult to connect with his family. He describes living in isolation, unable to communicate with his wife and young son. The crash has left him with ongoing physical ailments, including leg, shoulder, knee, and back pain, rendering him unable to work or drive.

Flames engulfed the Boeing 787 shortly after takeoff in western India, a terrifying event that shocked the world. While initial footage showed Mr. Ramesh appearing relatively unharmed, the reality of his recovery has been far more challenging. He expressed his disbelief at his survival, calling it a “miracle,” but the immense personal loss weighs heavily on him. “I lost my brother as well. My brother is my backbone. Last few years, he was always supporting me,” he stated emotionally.

Community leaders have voiced concerns over the support Mr. Ramesh has received from Air India since the crash, urging the airline to engage directly with him to address his needs. Despite an interim compensation offer, his representatives believe it is insufficient given the immense impact on his life and business.

Air India has stated that senior leaders from its parent company are actively engaging with affected families and have extended an offer for a meeting with Mr. Ramesh’s representatives, hoping for a positive response. The airline maintains that a commitment to supporting Mr. Ramesh and all those affected remains their highest priority.
