A recent social media video suggesting the closure of Mumbai’s iconic Prithvi Theatre caused a stir. However, actor Zahan Kapoor, a trustee of the theatre, clarified that the theatre was actually undergoing its annual renovation period, which typically happens before the Prithvi Theatre Festival. He explained the video was a playful, albeit dramatic, way to communicate this maintenance work.
“Every year in October, for the last 10 years or so, is the time where Prithvi shuts operations for about three weeks, before we reopen with the festival. It is in that period where we do maintenance and renovation. It’s just this year the communication of that has happened in a slightly more impactful and dramatic way. Ye hamari masti thi and maine bola ki karte hain thoda, log darr jayenge,” Kapoor shared, amused by the public’s reaction.
Kapoor noted that while the theatre usually informs visitors about these renovations on-site, this year’s virtual announcement led to a significant response. He found it heartening that people reacted so strongly, as it demonstrated the deep value they place on the theatre beyond just the regular audience.
Reflecting on the venue’s personal importance, Kapoor stated, “It’s undoubtedly the second biggest influence in my life outside of my parents. It’s exposed me to art, culture and people from across the country.”
He also touched upon the financial realities of theatre, acknowledging that it’s challenging to sustain a living solely from stage work, unlike the more economically stable film industry. He drew parallels to his grandfather’s era, where cinema often provided a more reliable income stream.
Kapoor emphasized the ongoing importance of celebrating live performance and nurturing these values in society, especially as he sees a shift in the cultural landscape. He believes that in our increasingly digital world, live experiences will become even more cherished. “IRL is the new luxury,” he concluded, noting the trend of A-list actors returning to the stage in the West.
