Chris Stockman, the visionary director behind the original Saints Row, has ignited a flicker of hope among fans. He’s revealed that he’s been approached to craft a pitch for a potential prequel, aiming to bring the series back to its cherished beginnings. Stockman, who previously led design at Volition before establishing Bit Planet Games, shared exclusively with us that he’s “attempting to get the band back together.” While plans are still in their very early stages, the prospect of this classic Grand Theft Auto rival making a grand return, perhaps even alongside the highly anticipated GTA 6, is incredibly exciting.
“I’ve been asked to create a pitch for a Saints Row prequel,” Stockman announced earlier this week on the game’s community forum. “I can’t say anything more than that, but my dreams for this game just became a little more than just dreams.” We reached out to Stockman to verify his statement and seek further insight into his vision for the open-world title. He reiterated his ambition to develop a prequel, adding, “I won’t say much beyond that yet, as I want to keep my cards close to my chest, for now.”

Stockman revealed that he contacted Embracer Group, the current Saints Row intellectual property holder, following a recent interview with Esports Insider that generated considerable excitement. In that October discussion, he openly questioned the value of rebooting the series, asserting that the most recent iteration “wasn’t Saints Row at all” without its iconic, beloved characters.
“I want to bring the Saints Row franchise back to its roots,” Stockman explained to us. “As you know, I directed Saints Row 1, and I feel the series has strayed too far from that original vision. While I understand the creative decisions made, ultimately, they led the franchise into a corner it couldn’t easily escape.” The article notes that while Saints Row The Third was enjoyable, it undoubtedly propelled the series into a cycle of increasingly wild and unsustainable escalation.
Naturally, it’s still very early days, so temper your expectations. However, Stockman confirmed, “There is interest. A pitch has been requested.” He enthusiastically added, “I am attempting to get the band back together. If this works, this will be an amazing story. I hope it works!”
