Exciting news for Saints Row fans! The game’s original director, Chris Stockman, is reportedly working on a pitch for a prequel, hinting at a potential return to the series’ foundational style. Stockman, who was the design director for the first Saints Row at Volition before establishing Bit Planet Games, shared that he’s “attempting to get the band back together.” While plans are still in early stages, the prospect of this Grand Theft Auto rival returning alongside the highly anticipated GTA 6 release is generating considerable buzz.
Earlier this week, Stockman revealed his involvement on Reddit, stating, “I’ve been asked to create a pitch for a Saints Row prequel. I can’t say anything more than that but my dreams for this game just became a little more than just dreams.” When contacted for further details on his vision for the open-world franchise, Stockman reiterated his goal: “I’m aiming to do a prequel,” but emphasized a need to “keep my cards close to my chest, for now.”
Stockman disclosed that he initiated contact with Embracer Group, the Saints Row IP holder, following an interview with Esports Insider that generated significant excitement. In that October interview, he openly criticized the decision to reboot the series, arguing that without its iconic characters, it lost its essence and “wasn’t Saints Row at all.”
He explained, “I want to bring back the Saints Row franchise to its roots. As you know I directed Saints Row 1 and I feel the series has strayed way too far away from that. I completely understand why they went that way but in the end they kind of painted themselves into a corner they couldn’t get out of.” He implied that while later entries like Saints Row The Third had their merits, they perhaps pushed the series too far from its original identity.
While it’s still very early, Stockman confirmed there’s “interest” and “a pitch has been requested.” He expressed enthusiasm, adding, “I am attempting to get the band back together. If this works this will be an amazing story. I hope it works!”
Many believe a strong Saints Row revival would perfectly complement the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6. Until then, there are many other excellent crime-themed games available to enjoy.
