Social media is abuzz with a dramatic video showcasing a cruise ship, the Iberotel Crown Empress, engulfed in a fierce blaze. The terrifying footage captures the vessel on fire during the first day of its 12-day journey along the River Nile in Egypt. Fortunately, the incident resulted in no reported fatalities or injuries.
The Cause of the Fire:
Initial reports suggest the fire may have originated in the ship’s galley. While the exact cause is still under investigation, authorities are working to determine how the blaze began.
The intense fire caused significant damage, affecting the ship’s hall and several cabins. In response, the ship’s crew safely relocated passengers to the upper deck. Rescue operations were initiated once the vessel reached an unofficial anchorage point.
One passenger described the frightening experience to VRT News: “At 6:30pm, other boats shone flashlights toward our cabins. When we opened the window, we saw a huge plume of smoke on deck.” The evacuation process was described as challenging, particularly due to the fire on the ground floor, which is a primary exit route. Passengers had to leave their belongings behind in their haste to escape.
Ongoing Investigation:
Authorities and cruise operators are currently reviewing the incident. An assessment of safety protocols on other Nile cruise ships is also expected as part of the ongoing investigation. The Iberotel Crown Empress has been temporarily removed from service.
