A series of Israeli airstrikes targeted Gaza on Tuesday night, claiming the lives of at least 104 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in the territory. The Israeli military stated these actions were a response to “dozens of terror targets and terrorists” and alleged violations of the US-brokered ceasefire agreement by Hamas.
Israel’s defense minister accused Hamas of an attack that killed an Israeli soldier and of failing to return the bodies of deceased hostages. Hamas has denied involvement in the attack and suggested Israel is attempting to sabotage the peace deal.
Despite the escalating violence, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that the ceasefire would not be jeopardized, while also stating that Israel has the right to retaliate when its soldiers are targeted.
The strikes reportedly hit homes, schools, and residential buildings in various locations across Gaza, including Gaza City, Beit Lahia, Bureij, Nuseirat, and Khan Younis. Witnesses described intense explosions and scenes of destruction. The Gaza health ministry reported that among the casualties were 46 children and 20 women, with over 250 individuals injured.
In response to the reported attack on its soldiers in Rafah, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced the “renewed enforcement of the ceasefire,” detailing strikes on numerous targets, including Hamas commanders. The IDF vowed to continue upholding the ceasefire but to respond forcefully to any violations.
Hamas reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire and accused Israel of fabricating pretexts for further aggression. The Red Cross condemned a staged “fake recovery” of a hostage’s body, emphasizing the unacceptability of such actions given the fragility of the agreement and the anxiety of families awaiting news.
The situation remains tense, with international bodies urging de-escalation and adherence to the peace process.
