Spine: Everything You Need to Know About the Gun-Fu Action Game

October 29, 2025
in Gaming
Reading Time: 7 min

Are you eager for the Spine release date? If high-octane action, seamless gunplay, and martial arts choreography reminiscent of classic John Woo films excite you, then Spine is probably high on your wishlist. Set in a dystopian cyberpunk future, the city is under the iron grip of the Tensor AI, which uses advanced drone technology to crush any hint of rebellion. You’ll step into the shoes of Redline, a determined protagonist fueled by a personal vendetta against the AI and its oppressive elite. She’s on a relentless mission to dismantle their power, no matter the cost.

Fans of dynamic gun-fu combat might need to exercise a little patience for Spine, which is a pity given its incredibly appealing cyberpunk aesthetic. This upcoming story-driven action-adventure title promises an intense, cinematic journey, leveraging sophisticated film choreography and camera techniques to deliver an unparalleled experience. Here’s a comprehensive look at everything currently known about the Spine release window, available trailers, and much more.

Spine Release Window

The developers, Nekki, initially indicated a late 2025 release for Spine in a press release alongside their Future Games Show 2024 gameplay trailer. However, as 2025 draws to a close, it appears more probable that we will see Spine launching in 2026. This highly anticipated title is slated for PC (via Steam), Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and the Nintendo Switch 2. While earlier cinematic trailers from 2021 hinted at mobile versions for iOS and Android, these seem to have been silently discontinued. We’ll keep an eye out for any updates on its potential availability on services like Game Pass.

Nekki also manages a Web3 NFT browser game and continues to support its other mobile titles, such as Shadow Fight Arena and the broader Shadow Fight series.

Spine Trailers

The inaugural full-length trailer for Spine, released in 2021, introduced a mysterious woman navigating a futuristic cityscape, evading relentless drones and riot police. Cornered on a rooftop, her digital vision reveals pursuing soldiers. A moment later, it’s unveiled that the fleeing figure was merely an illusion, with her true self concealed on a higher perch. The trailer culminates in a desperate battle, showcasing her agile use of multiple blades and firearms against two formidable adversaries employing a unique spinning attack.

Spine’s official reveal in November 2023 finally unveiled our protagonist, Redline, accompanied by her AI companion (a nod that Cyberpunk Edgerunners enthusiasts will surely appreciate). This trailer was packed with stunning gun-fu sequences, dynamic camera work, and a glimpse into some of the game’s intricate combat environments.

The year 2024 brought us a double dose of trailer action. August saw the release of the bosses and parkour reveal, followed by the spray paint and camerawork trailer in December.

The August trailer begins with Redline delivering exposition that sets the stage for Spine’s core narrative: her brother has been taken by Tensor, making this a deeply personal fight. We witness Redline expertly engaging imposing, often mech-based, boss enemies. The trailer also provides a quick look at the parkour system, where a dynamic, off-center camera elegantly tracks Redline as she traverses buildings.

True to its name, the Spray Paint and Camerawork trailer offers a rich visual tapestry, blending traditional perspectives with side-scrolling, dynamic, and even top-down camera angles (a treat for John Wick and Hong Kong Massacre fans!). The innovative spray paint mechanic is also highlighted, allowing Redline to temporarily blind enemies and gain a crucial tactical advantage.

Most recently, the Freeflow Combat Design trailer delivers exactly what it promises, showcasing several incredibly fluid and seamless combat sequences. While it doesn’t necessarily introduce new gameplay elements, it emphasizes the game’s impressive polish as it approaches its anticipated launch.

Spine Gameplay

Spine’s core gameplay brilliantly merges gunplay with intricate martial arts – a style commonly referred to as ‘gun fu.’ Redline seamlessly combines swift pistol shots with rapid physical strikes, creating an exhilarating and fluid combat experience. Game director Dmitry Pimenov aptly describes it as “an action movie within a game.”

The various trailers reveal Redline’s ability to execute enemies in diverse ways, including spectacular environmental finishers, such as dramatically tossing opponents off bridges. Redline’s arsenal includes pistols and shotguns, though we await confirmation of her full range of weaponry.

A unique feature in Spine is the spray paint mechanic, which enables Redline to momentarily blind adversaries. This tactic can even be deployed against foes piloting mechs, as seen in trailers where Redline sprays a mech’s visor.

Thanks to its innovative Intellectual Camera System, Spine fluidly transitions between perspectives. Beyond the standard follow-camera, players will encounter engaging side-scrolling and top-down sections. When Redline is performing parkour across buildings, a dynamic, off-center camera enhances the cinematic feel of her movements.

In addition to what the trailers have shown, the Steam page for Spine hints that Redline’s cybernetic enhancements are powered by the glowing spinal cord on her back. It’s still early to determine if this is purely a UI element or signifies a system for choosing various perks and abilities.

Spine Latest News

While there hasn’t been a specific update on the Spine release date since the late 2025 window was announced, Nekki has reassured fans that development is “deep in development.” A recent developer blog indicates that the game is currently undergoing extensive testing and refinement.

Initially, Spine was conceived as a “team-based PvP action game (3-vs-3 player)” according to an older Nekki Facebook post. However, its development focus has since shifted entirely to a single-player experience. This significant change in direction is likely a key factor in the game’s extended development timeline.

We also know that Spine is built on Unreal Engine 5, which significantly contributes to the game’s cinematic visuals. The advantages of UE5 also extend to character animations; Nekki states that Spine’s character rigs are inspired by MetaHuman, Unreal Engine’s advanced character creation tool allowing for detailed customization.

Perhaps the most crucial tool in Nekki’s animation arsenal is Cascadeur, an in-house animation software developed by the studio over more than fifteen years. A developer blog clarifies, “It lets us polish mocap data without losing realism.” The studio captures motion using professional stunt performers and martial artists with full-body Xsens suits, a technology also utilized in games like Riders Republic and Creed: Rise to Glory.

That covers all the current information available about Spine. While you wait for this action-packed title, be sure to check out our lists of the best new PC games released recently and other exciting upcoming PC games scheduled for the months ahead.
