Bringing back cherished classic maps in new game installments like Battlefield 6 is far from a simple copy-paste job, according to Battlefield Studios. While fans are excited to revisit favorites such as Battlefield 3’s Operation Firestorm, developers reveal that the remastering process presents surprisingly complex challenges.
Shashank Uchil, design director, frankly admitted in an interview, “You wouldn’t believe how difficult it is,” highlighting that the difficulty stems from unexpected areas.

One primary hurdle, Uchil explained, is managing player expectations. With maps like Operation Firestorm originally released 14 years ago in 2011, players often view these classics through “rose-tinted glasses,” remembering them with a deep sense of nostalgia that might not perfectly align with their original design or the capabilities of a modern engine.
The updated technology in Battlefield 6, including its distinct destruction system and an entirely new arsenal of weapons, significantly complicates the faithful recreation of older maps. These new elements mean that simply rebuilding the map isn’t enough; extensive rebalancing and design adjustments are necessary.
Producer Jeremy Chubb emphasized the “fine line” developers must walk. Players crave the original experience, but a mere replica would feel disappointing if it didn’t evolve and incorporate the innovative features and ideas present in the new game.
At launch, Battlefield 6 will feature nine multiplayer maps, including the revitalized Operation Firestorm. While unconfirmed, datamining efforts suggest that more remastered maps might be on the horizon, potentially including Propaganda (from Battlefield 4), Talah Market (from Battlefield 3), and Downtown (from Battlefield Hardline). EA has also confirmed plans to introduce additional maps post-launch through its ongoing seasonal DLC model.
Mark your calendars: Battlefield 6 is set to launch on October 10 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. A new battle royale mode is also currently in development.
