Irish President Michael D. Higgins has spent a night in the hospital to receive treatment for a localized infection.
The President was admitted to St. James’s Hospital in Dublin by prior arrangement on Sunday and has commenced a course of antibiotics.
According to a statement released on Monday, President Higgins’ medical team has observed a significant improvement following the start of treatment. Following their advice, he has agreed to remain in hospital to complete his course of antibiotics.
President Higgins is scheduled to continue in his role until Catherine Connolly takes office as the new President on November 11th at Dublin Castle.
Earlier, President Higgins extended his congratulations to Catherine Connolly on her decisive election victory over the weekend.
Ms. Connolly, an independent candidate, secured a record-breaking 914,143 first preference votes, achieving 63% of the vote, the highest number ever recorded in an Irish presidential election.
However, the significant number of 213,738 spoiled votes has prompted calls for discussion among politicians.
Catherine Connolly was officially confirmed as the 10th President of the Republic of Ireland on Saturday evening at Dublin Castle, following her victory over Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys.
