Chennai is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of renowned Tamil actor and comedian, Robo Shankar, who left us on Thursday, September 18, at the age of 46.
The much-loved personality was admitted to a private hospital in the city just days prior, following a reported collapse on the sets of his latest film. Initial reports suggest that he was diagnosed with renal failure upon admission.
Despite the medical team’s best efforts, his health took a critical turn on Wednesday, leading to his transfer to the intensive care unit. Tragically, he succumbed to his illness this evening.
Hailing from Madurai, Shankar adopted the stage name ‘Robo’ due to his unique, robotic dance moves that captivated audiences. After a decade of taking on minor roles in the early 2000s, he achieved widespread recognition through Star Vijay’s highly acclaimed reality stand-up comedy program, Kalakka Povathu Yaaru.
His impeccable comedic timing and distinct body language quickly made him a sought-after talent in Tamil cinema. He went on to star in notable films like Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara and Vaayai Moodi Pesavum, with his memorable role in the latter film being a significant turning point in his career.

Throughout his career, Shankar graced the silver screen in numerous films, including Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran, Kadavul Irukaan Kumaru, Singam 3, Viswasam, and Cobra. However, his most iconic performance, for which he will be fondly remembered, was undoubtedly his stellar role in Dhanush’s hit film, Maari.
Some years ago, Shankar had temporarily stepped away from the public eye to undergo extensive treatment for jaundice. His significant weight loss during that period sparked concern among his dedicated fan base. In 2023, he also faced a minor controversy concerning the housing of two Alexandrine parakeets, a species protected under Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
Fortunately, Shankar made a strong comeback, delighting audiences in several television shows and films, including Are You Ok Baby?, Singapore Saloon, and Jolly O Gymkhana. His final screen appearance this year was in the comedy-drama Sotta Sotta Nanaiyuthu.
Robo Shankar is survived by his wife, Priyanka Shankar, who is also an accomplished actor, and their daughter, Indraja Shankar, an actor and influencer.
The news of Shankar’s untimely demise has sent shockwaves through the industry. Tributes and condolences have been pouring in from countless fans and fellow artists, including a poignant note from veteran actor Kamal Haasan shared on his X handle.
