The situation for children in Gaza remains dire, with many critically ill patients facing a heartbreaking wait for urgent medical care outside the territory. Reports indicate that approximately 15,000 individuals are in desperate need of medical evacuations, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Two young boys, both around ten years old, are currently in different wards at Nasser Hospital. One, shot by Israeli forces and paralyzed from the neck down, requires complex surgery. The other suffers from a brain tumor. Their families are pleading for their swift evacuation to facilities capable of providing the specialized treatment they desperately need.
The WHO has emphasized the critical state of Gaza’s healthcare system, which has been severely impacted by the ongoing conflict. The organization is advocating for a significant increase in medical evacuations, with a particular focus on reopening routes that would allow patients to receive care in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as was possible before the current escalation.
The director of pediatrics and maternity at Nasser Hospital expressed the profound distress of medical professionals who are equipped to diagnose conditions but lack the resources and facilities to provide necessary treatments. This shortage, he stated, leads to a tragic daily loss of life.
The ceasefire has offered a glimmer of hope for families, but for many, the delays in enabling medical travel are proving fatal. Several young children have recently succumbed to their conditions, including leukemia, stomach cancer, and hepatitis, underscoring the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate international action to facilitate these life-saving evacuations.
