Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced a decision to pause his province’s advertising campaign targeting US tariffs. This move comes after President Donald Trump reacted negatively to the ads, leading to the termination of trade talks between the US and Canada.
Following a conversation with Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday, Ford stated that the advertisement would be taken down starting Monday to facilitate the resumption of trade discussions. However, the ad is still scheduled to air over the weekend, including during broadcasts of the Major League Baseball World Series games.
Prime Minister Carney had earlier expressed Canada’s readiness to re-engage in trade talks with the US, stating that the country would be prepared to resume negotiations “when the Americans are ready.”
President Trump had publicly criticized the advertisement late Thursday, labeling it “FAKE” and “egregious” on social media, which he followed by declaring the trade talks “HEREBY TERMINATED.” The advertisement, sponsored by the Ontario government, features a quote from former US President Ronald Reagan, a Republican icon, who stated that tariffs are detrimental to all Americans.
