I’ve sunk countless hours into Hades 2 during its early access phase, and honestly, I’m a bit afraid to check the exact number. Since its official release, I’ve likely played just as much again. Yet, despite all that time, I still haven’t witnessed the game’s true ending. This works out perfectly for this article (and for me!), because developer Supergiant Games has just significantly improved it with the game’s first proper post-launch patch – and no, we’re not counting hotfixes here.
While Hades 2 rightly earns its spot among the best roguelike games, it wasn’t without its minor imperfections. Personally, I found the narrative depth of the original game slightly more compelling, even with similar engaging combat mechanics. However, Supergiant has consistently demonstrated a willingness to listen to its community, adapting and refining elements that aren’t quite hitting the mark, both in Hades 2’s early access and their past titles.
We saw this commitment with an earlier hotfix that addressed the frustrating Phantom mini-boss, a character many were surprised made it out of early access, alongside some tweaks to the final boss. Now, this first major patch goes even further. Players have voiced strong complaints about the initial true ending, describing it as “unsatisfying, rushed,” and even suggesting it “retroactively makes certain parts of the game worse.” Without revealing any spoilers, Supergiant’s latest changes promise a much more rewarding experience for those of us still journeying to the finish line, or those who rushed it initially.
The updated true ending incorporates additional events both leading up to and following the conclusion, aiming to provide richer narrative context. These new additions feature fresh artwork, character portraits, and voice lines, ensuring they seamlessly integrate with the game’s established style. While this does mean you’ll need a few more Underworld clears to reach the true ending, I certainly won’t be complaining about extra time in Hades. The primary true ending scenes, experienced before the final credits, have also been “added to and revised,” setting the stage for a truly satisfying finale.
For those who have already experienced the original true ending, there’s a thoughtful new cauldron incantation you can activate. This allows you to jump back to earlier points in the story, enabling you to witness these significant changes firsthand.
Beyond the enhanced ending and epilogue, the patch also introduces numerous balance adjustments. A total of 11 boons and blessings have received substantial buffs, while just one, the Gigaros Dash, has seen a slight nerf. Other gameplay elements, including keepsakes, Daedalus hammer upgrades, various enemies, and special encounters, have all been carefully tweaked to refine the overall experience.
After seeing so much discussion about Hades 2’s initial underwhelming conclusion, this first major patch has finally given me the push I needed to complete the game. While the patch itself is still in beta preview and may undergo further adjustments before its full release (Supergiant is known for its iterative early access development), I’m genuinely excited to dive back in and experience the true ending for myself.
Hades 2 Patch 1 is currently available to preview in beta, though a full release date for the complete patch has not yet been announced.
