Immerse Yourself in the Art of Star Wars: A New Hope Manga with This Premium New Book

It took decades to arrive, but the 1997 manga adaptation of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope was truly a work of art. Now, the magnificent illustrations by mangaka Hisao Tamaki are being compiled into a stunning new art book from Dark Horse Books. This hardcover collection, featuring Tamaki’s original art boards, is the successful outcome of a Kickstarter campaign. It’s slated for release on June 16, 2026, and is available for preorder.

This unique art book offers high-resolution scans of Tamaki’s original artboards from the first volume of the Star Wars: A New Hope manga. It presents the artwork with all the authentic production details usually removed before printing, including ink bleeds, handwritten notes, and other elements from the illustration process. The art is accompanied by a brand-new translation of the original Japanese text, and the book also features an in-depth interview with Tamaki himself.

While “The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope – The Manga, Vol. 1” focuses solely on the beginning of the “A New Hope” story, the wider Star Wars manga series did continue with adaptations of “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Return of the Jedi,” and the first prequel film, “The Phantom Menace.” Each of these later volumes was brought to life by different artists. The final English volume was released in 2015, and there are currently no indications that the remaining five mainline films will receive manga adaptations. Regardless, the Star Wars manga offers a unique and engaging way to revisit a significant portion of the beloved saga. Physical copies can be difficult to find, but digital Kindle editions of the entire 14-volume collection are readily available.

The universe of Star Wars manga extends beyond the main films. The popular Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” also has an ongoing manga adaptation, meticulously illustrated by Yusuke Osawa. This series currently spans three volumes, offering a faithful, word-for-word recreation of Din Djarin and Grogu’s adventures.

Star Wars has also embraced anime with the “Star Wars: Visions” anthology series on Disney+. With its third season on the horizon, fans can delve deeper with two inspired books. “Star Wars: Visions – The Manga Anthology” reinterprets stories from the first season, featuring art from talents like Kamome Shirahama and Yusuke Osawa. The “Star Wars: Visions – Treasury Edition” offers two entirely new narratives: one from manga legend Takashi Okazaki, continuing the “The Duel” short, and another by Peach Momoko, exploring the enigmatic cult of the Sith.

Beyond adaptations, the Star Wars galaxy boasts several original manga series. These include “The Legends of Luke Skywalker,” which adapts Ken Liu’s novel, and the six-volume “Star Wars: The Edge of Balance” manga series, set centuries before the prequel films during the High Republic era.

Anticipation is building for “Star Wars: Path of the Lightsaber, Vol. 1,” launching November 11. This new series, set during the sequel trilogy, introduces Nioka, a fresh character with dreams of becoming a Jedi. Her journey dramatically begins when she stumbles upon a lost lightsaber, drawing her into the epic clash between the First Order and the Republic Resistance. Preorders are currently open.
