For those eagerly awaiting the return to Vice City with GTA 6, there’s exciting news! The beloved cult-classic PC and PS2 adventure, Scarface: The World is Yours, has unexpectedly resurfaced after nearly two decades. Following an accidental early release on the Epic Games Store, it’s now being fast-tracked for Steam. This acclaimed crime game, celebrated for its unique licensed take on the genre, offers a fresh opportunity to dive back into the notorious life of Tony Montana and rewrite his infamous fate.
Scarface: The World is Yours picks up right where the iconic 1983 film left off, but with a twist – it reimagines Tony Montana’s dramatic ending, sending him on a vengeful quest to reclaim his empire. This action-adventure title was a formidable competitor to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, though it didn’t quite achieve the vastness of Rockstar’s San Andreas. Notably, it perfectly captured the original film’s essence, featuring André Sogliuzzo, personally chosen by Al Pacino, to voice Tony with authentic ’80s flair.
The sudden reappearance of this Scarface re-release on the Epic Games Store today, October 22, took many by surprise. Publisher EC Digital has since confirmed that the game will also launch on Steam and has clarified their approach to AI upscaling, offering it as an optional visual enhancement.
In a statement posted to the game’s Steam page, EC Digital explained that the early Epic Games Store launch was ‘due to a technical issue during backend configuration,’ leading to the game being ‘unintentionally pushed live on a different platform earlier than planned.’ They assured fans that Steam remains a key long-term release platform and that efforts are being fast-tracked to finalize that version. The publisher also mentioned that some content on the current store page might be ‘placeholder content’ as a result of the hastened release.
EC Digital further detailed that the upcoming Steam version will feature an optional HD graphics upgrade, available as free DLC. This enhancement leverages AI-assisted techniques to sharpen various visual elements while preserving the game’s original feel. The AI integration is entirely optional, allowing players to seamlessly switch between classic and enhanced visuals at their convenience. While AI upscaling can be a contentious topic, offering it as a choice for players who desire it is a thoughtful approach.
However, an interesting detail has emerged: a prominent Scarface modder, known as ‘Silent,’ alleges that this new re-release incorporates their ‘SilentPatch’ and ‘Fusion Fix’ modifications. According to Silent, neither they nor their collaborators were contacted beforehand – a courtesy they felt would have been appreciated, even if not legally required by the license. Silent also expressed skepticism regarding the re-release, stating they had information that the Scarface license holder was previously unwilling to re-release the game. This situation suggests it might be wise for potential buyers to observe how these claims unfold before making a purchase.
Scarface: The World is Yours is currently available on the Epic Games Store for $29.99 / £23.79, with a Steam release slated for the near future.
