This impressive remake of the classic Super Famicom JRPG, released last October, might have flown under the radar amidst other great RPGs of 2024. However, Square Enix has lovingly crafted a unique turn-based RPG that offers a rich experience, easily worth the 40-60 hours needed to complete its main campaign.
Romancing SaGa 2 is a complete remake of the 1993 Super Famicom original. While an HD remaster came out in 2017, this new version features stunning full 3D graphics and a revamped “timeline” battle system, reminiscent of newer titles like SaGa Emerald Beyond. It also includes helpful quality-of-life improvements, such as multiple difficulty options, making it more welcoming for newcomers.
The game puts you in the shoes of a royal family, tasked with protecting their empire from global threats. Beyond its deep and nuanced combat, Romancing SaGa 2 introduces engaging castle-building mechanics, allowing you to construct and manage fortresses across your kingdom. True to the series’ roots, your choices in exploration, dialogue, and side quests can significantly alter the unfolding narrative, offering a surprisingly open-ended adventure that feels fresh even by today’s standards. This beautiful remake is a fantastic chance to either discover it for the first time or revisit it through a different story path.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven for Nintendo Switch

For those playing on Nintendo Switch 1 or 2, while the PS5 version boasts better visuals and performance, Revenge of the Seven delivers a solid experience on Nintendo’s handhelds. On the original Switch, it runs at a fairly stable 30fps with 720p resolution in handheld mode and 1080p when docked. You might notice some longer load times and occasional brief frame rate dips.
As previously mentioned, Square Enix released a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game in late July, available digitally for the same price as the original. Owners of a physical Switch copy can purchase the Switch 2 Upgrade Pack for $10.
The Switch 2 edition offers a noticeable improvement in both visuals and performance, reaching up to 1440p resolution and 60fps when docked. In handheld mode, you can enjoy 1080p resolution. Alongside these visual enhancements, Switch 2 users benefit from significantly faster load times.

Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered International

SaGa enthusiasts can also pre-order the upcoming physical edition of Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered International for PS5 and Nintendo Switch. This excellent remaster initially launched in 2022 across PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile platforms.
Similar to Romancing SaGa 2, the physical version of Minstrel Song Remastered is exclusively available for PS5 and Nintendo Switch, thanks to Square Enix’s partnership with publisher Red Art Games.
Romancing SaGa Remastered International is set to release on December 9. If you’re keen to add a copy to your RPG collection, pre-ordering is advisable due to an anticipated small print run.
