Star Wars Outlaws review: a woman and her pet alien puppy wait for a meal.

Star Wars Outlaws

While the initial reception for Star Wars Outlaws was mixed, many fans have still found a lot to adore. Whether it’s Nix, Kay’s adorable companion, the rich tapestry of references to beloved Star Wars characters, planets, and lore, or the expansive open-world adventure itself, Star Wars Outlaws offers plenty to explore and enjoy.

Despite its launch challenges, the developers have actively listened to feedback and implemented significant improvements. They’ve removed frustrating forced stealth sections and refined the combat, resulting in a much more satisfying overall experience for players.

Star Wars Bounty Hunter Remaster

In 2024, fans received a welcome dose of nostalgia with the Star Wars Bounty Hunter Remaster. This third-person action-adventure game plunges you into the role of Jango Fett, a formidable bounty hunter scouring the galaxy for his targets. It’s a straightforward, enjoyable experience that simply works. Boasting a ‘Very Positive’ rating from players, Bounty Hunter is an excellent choice for those seeking a no-frills adventure alongside everyone’s (second) favorite bounty hunter.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

It would have been easy for TT Games to simply repackage existing Lego Star Wars titles, but they truly went above and beyond with The Skywalker Saga. The content covering the sequel trilogy is brilliantly integrated with reimagined sections inspired by previous Lego Star Wars games, cementing this as one of the definitive Star Wars gaming experiences available.

Of course, everything is rendered in charming Lego style, but for fans spanning across all the different trilogies, what better way to experience the entire saga than through the delightful lens of a highly sophisticated interlocking brick system (definitely not just a toy)? This isn’t just an excellent Star Wars game; it’s also a fantastic cooperative experience if you’re looking for something new to play with friends or partners. Just remember to use those codes to unlock exciting new cosmetics to flaunt to your fellow players!

Best Star Wars games on PC: a Jedi fires lightning from his fingertips

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords

While the first Knights of the Old Republic offered a compelling, if somewhat traditional, narrative with its iconic twists, its sequel, with Obsidian at the helm, proved to be far more ambitious. It retains all the beloved elements of a classic Star Wars adventure – lightsabers, the Force, and the struggle between Light and Dark – but envelops them in a much bleaker, more philosophical story. This makes it an exceptional game for those who appreciate deep narratives.

Beyond allowing players to explore both the Light and Dark sides of the Force, it delves into the nuanced grey areas that lie between them. Yet, it’s far from just a ponderous experience; expect thrilling lightsaber duels, the chance to recruit or corrupt intriguing new companions, and the constant emergence of new adversaries, making this an unforgettable space odyssey.

Star Wars: Republic Commando

A shining example that not everything from the prequel era was uninspired, Republic Commando is akin to the Rainbow Six of the Clone Wars. You play as RC-1138, a special ops clone trooper, embarking on missions alongside three other commandos whom you can direct with various tactical and context-sensitive orders. Influenced by both popular shooters and renowned tactical games, Republic Commando’s strategic elements never overshadowed its fast-paced run-and-gun action. Its straightforward approach is something many fans wish to see more of in modern titles.

Often hailed as one of the most underrated Star Wars games, it’s notable for entirely sidelining Jedi, instead offering a grittier, ground-level military feel. Clever details like modular weapons, a wrist-mounted blade, and a visor wiper that clears enemy blood splatter ensure Republic Commando possesses a unique charm all its own.

Best Star Wars games on PC: A huge space battle involving ships of all sizes

Star Wars: Empire at War

The core Star Wars films often center on intimate struggles, like Luke and Vader, or Anakin and Palpatine. Yet, the saga is ultimately defined by these personal relationships set against the backdrop of a colossal galactic conflict – a perfect canvas for a real-time strategy game. LucasArts has released numerous strategy titles within the Star Wars universe, but Empire at War easily stands out as the finest.

Positioned between Episodes III and IV, Empire at War chronicles the escalating war between the formidable Empire and the defiant Rebel Alliance. An expansive campaign map featuring countless planets allows you to research advanced technologies and establish crucial planetary defenses, incorporating elements often found in grand strategy experiences.

Skirmishes unfold both on land with troops and vehicles, and in the vastness of space with powerful cruisers and agile fighters, culminating in the iconic assault on the first Death Star. Given that third-person action games dominate much of the Star Wars gaming library, this title offers a refreshing change of pace. Unfortunately, despite a sequel being pitched to a major publisher some time ago, no further developments have materialized.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars: The Old Republic has always grappled with a bit of an identity crisis. On one hand, it strives to be a direct continuation of the single-player Knights of the Old Republic series, offering several distinct class stories that let you embody characters like a cunning Chiss Imperial Agent or a powerful Sith Warrior. On the other hand, it aims to be one of the premier online multiplayer role-playing games, though its traditional structure and sometimes challenging free-to-play elements occasionally hinder its aspirations.

Despite these internal conflicts, the individual class stories are undeniably compelling and well worth the intergalactic journey. They are ambitious, deeply authentic to the Star Wars spirit, and epic in their scale. Its fifth expansion, Knights of the Fallen Empire, almost entirely shifts its focus to this narrative-driven aspect. Knights of the Fallen Empire feels, at its core, like a single-player game cleverly embedded within an MMO. It’s a superb experience, even echoing the depth of Knights of the Old Republic II. Even though this Star Wars game works hard to transcend its genre, it’s a must-play, representing the closest experience we have to a true KOTOR sequel.

Best Star Wars games on PC: a high speed race on a desert planet

Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer

Whatever your feelings about Episode I, there’s no denying that its pod race sequence was a magnificent spectacle, offering a thrilling glimpse into the competitive sporting world of a galaxy far, far away. Star Wars: Episode I Racer brilliantly transforms this high-octane scene into a full-fledged game. Players take on the role of a daring pod racer, embarking on a season of intense races across numerous unique planets. Each track vividly showcases the distinct environment and mythos of its planet, such as the Spice Mine Run on Mon Gazza, which snakes through its colossal spice extraction facility.

You can use your prize winnings to enhance your pod racer’s performance or recruit Pit Droids for more efficient repairs. New racers become available through gameplay, with the ultimate reward being the chance to control Sebulba and his rival-incinerating flamethrowers. The pod racers sound incredibly authentic, benefiting immensely from the licensed sound effects taken directly from the films. While it may not boast modern graphics, this racing game successfully extracts a strong, enjoyable experience from that treaty-obsessed first prequel.

Mon Mothma is briefing Kyle Katarn in the intro to Star Wars Dark Forces Remaster, one of the best Star Wars games ever made.

Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster

It may no longer be considered canon, but Kyle Katarn’s debut adventure remains one of the most beloved “Doom clones” ever created. Long before he wielded a lightsaber, we followed him on covert missions for the tenacious Rebel Alliance, uncovering a sinister Imperial plot to unleash a vast new army. Katarn’s objective? Eliminate all Imperial threats. The level design, especially for its era, was superb: this Star Wars game offered an elaborate and rewarding experience ripe for exploration, a stark contrast to the linear shooters often seen today.

It’s even easier to recommend now thanks to the highly acclaimed Star Wars Dark Forces Remaster from Nightdive Studios. This updated version features cleaner art for its 2D cutscenes and, for the first time, presents the game in widescreen. It also includes bonus features, such as behind-the-scenes footage from the original game’s development to a playable prototype level previously only shown during the Consumer Electronic Show demo. Alternatively, purists can still enjoy the classic pixelated version available on digital storefronts.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

While space often appears as a vast, empty expanse, there’s nothing quite like soaring over one of the galaxy’s breathtaking planets from the cockpit of an X-Wing for a truly stunning view. That’s precisely where Rogue Squadron takes you: this flight simulator is firmly set within atmospheric confines. Although your control freedom might be less expansive than in the X-Wing series, this doesn’t diminish Rogue Squadron’s status as an outstanding flight experience.

Rogue Squadron delivers fast-paced, tight gameplay, allowing you to rapidly strafe ground targets, unleash furious blaster fire, and engage in thrilling chase sequences. Your selection of starships may be modest, but the X-Wing, A-Wing, Y-Wing, V-Wing, and Snowspeeder each possess unique characteristics, ensuring that mission replays offer a distinctly different feel, even if the objectives remain the same.

Best Star Wars games on PC: a man rides a white two-legged creature through the snow

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (2005)

Not to be confused with the later EA Battlefront II game of the same name, this 2005 release is widely celebrated as the pinnacle of Star Wars multiplayer first-person shooter experiences. It’s essentially the spirit of Battlefield, infused with a generous helping of LucasFilm magic. Spanning both generations of Star Wars, you’ll dive into some of the most iconic battles of the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War. With four distinct classes offering varied combat roles, a substantial collection of vehicles, and expansive, open maps, you truly felt like you were on the front lines.

Battlefront 2 often feels like a genuine war game, primarily focusing on intense frontline combat between foot soldiers. However, this installment also brought Jedi and other legendary characters into the fray. Cleverly, to prevent everyone from wielding a lightsaber, Jedi are only unlocked after a team accumulates a certain number of points. This makes their appearance on the battlefield truly special, provided the player in control knows their way around a blade.

Best Star Wars games on PC: a pixilated view of a pilot looking through a shapeship's cockpit window

Star Wars: TIE Fighter

If you prefer to command the skies independently, TIE Fighter is an unparalleled choice. Its evolving narrative is frequently lauded as one of the finest Star Wars stories ever told, largely due to its unique tonal approach. Rather than portraying Imperial forces as cartoonishly evil, TIE Fighter depicts them as genuinely believing they are combating an army of terrorists. Playing as a TIE Fighter pilot never feels like embodying ‘the bad guy,’ but rather an essential cog in a formidable machine striving to crush a dangerous insurgency.

Beyond the compelling story, TIE Fighter allows you to strap into the cockpit of one of science fiction’s most iconic ship designs, and piloting it feels every bit as exhilarating as you’d imagine. Plus, you get the incredible opportunity to fly alongside the Dark Lord himself, an experience surely in everyone’s top five Star Wars fantasies.

Best Star Wars games on PC: a warrior slices through their enemy with a laser sword

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

The word ‘prequel’ can sometimes carry a negative connotation in Star Wars discussions. However, when we speak of a prequel to a prequel, especially BioWare’s Knights of the Old Republic, it’s a cause for celebration. This seminal RPG is set thousands of years before the rise of the Empire, effectively bringing a Dungeons & Dragons: Star Wars edition to life, and it’s every bit as brilliant as that sounds.

Its rich universe delves deep into aspects only hinted at in the core films, creating a narrative now considered part of the ‘Legends’ non-canon. The ominous threat of a Sith warrior named Darth Malak looms large, a danger compounded by his apprenticeship to Darth Revan, a shadowy, unseen power whose influence is as formidable as Vader, Sauron, and Voldemort combined. As with any BioWare RPG, your mission is to halt his machinations, gathering a diverse team of Jedi, smugglers, pilots, and mercenaries on your journey, all while commanding your own Millennium Falcon-esque vessel, the Ebon Hawk.

Knights of the Old Republic is revered as one of the best RPGs for many reasons: its compelling cast of characters, brilliant utilization of the Star Wars license, impeccable sound effects and music, strategic party-based combat, and impressive visuals for its era. But ask any long-time fan about the game’s crowning achievement, and they will invariably refer to one very specific plot twist. Even now, years after its launch, I hesitate to reveal it for fear of spoiling one of gaming’s most impactful narrative surprises.

A remake of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic has been in development for some time, with recent confirmations from the developers assuring fans that the project is still actively moving forward.

Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast

Kyle Katarn made a triumphant return to PC in Jedi Outcast, one of the most exquisitely crafted Star Wars experiences ever. Following a trajectory similar to its predecessor, Kyle once again finds himself transitioning from mercenary to Jedi, having previously severed ties with the Force after nearly succumbing to the dark side. Built on the powerful Quake III engine, the shooting mechanics are, as expected, robust, but it’s the lightsaber combat that truly elevates Jedi Knight II to masterpiece status, making it an exceptional sword-fighting game.

The ability to fluidly switch between light, medium, and heavy combat stances introduced a depth to lightsaber duels that was unprecedented at the time and, arguably, remains unmatched to this day. While modern titles have come close, the intensity of these duels perfectly captured the awe-inspiring clashes seen in the films. Furthermore, if you dared to input the ‘saberrealisticcombat’ cheat code into the game’s console, lightsaber swings would abruptly sever limbs and heads, leaving behind sizzling, cauterized stumps. Even accidentally brushing past characters with an extended blade would cut them down instantly.

When combined with Force abilities that felt every bit as potent as they looked, and a progression system that saw you become increasingly masterful with your powers, Jedi Knight 2 stands as the true, unparalleled Jedi simulator.

Two men fight with laser swords; their weapons clashing, causing sparks to fly.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Picking up five years after the events of Fallen Order, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor portrays a more seasoned and mature Cal Kestis in his ongoing battle against the Empire. He seeks out allies, both familiar faces and new, in a desperate bid to shift the balance of power. As critics have attested, the narrative is grander in scope, the combat system has undergone a satisfying evolution, and the worlds you explore are utterly captivating. While its launch was unfortunately marked by some technical issues, Survivor ultimately stands as a worthy successor to Fallen Order.

If you’re considering embarking on Cal’s next adventure, there are many resources available to guide you through the various characters, find all the hidden collectibles, and prepare you for the diverse enemies you’ll encounter along the way.

Star Wars: Squadrons

Star Wars: Squadrons serves as both a powerful blast of nostalgia for long-time fans of X-Wing and TIE Fighter, and an exceptionally well-crafted arcade flying game in its own right. It perfectly captures the iconic look and sounds of Star Wars’ most legendary ships, fighters, and spaceplanes, while incorporating enough strategic depth to keep its large-scale space battles consistently thrilling.

You’ll enjoy a solid single-player campaign, which is an excellent way to sharpen your dogfighting skills, before venturing into the multiplayer modes, which are already brimming with skilled flying aces ready for a challenge. And while the developers have indicated no plans for extensive post-launch content like new maps, modes, or ships, the core experience itself is profoundly rewarding and well worth your time, as many glowing reviews can confirm.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2017)

Boasting an original Star Wars story and stunningly beautiful multiplayer arenas, Battlefront 2 (2017) offers the ultimate modern big-battle experience. With the bulk of the intense fighting unfolding between the foot soldiers of various Star Wars factions, it’s always a spectacle when one of the many iconic heroes or villains joins the fray. Whether you’re charging in with Boba Fett or carving a path through the Empire with Luke Skywalker, Battlefront 2 delivers everything a dedicated Star Wars enthusiast could desire.

Initial critical reception was understandably concerned about the game’s heavy reliance on microtransactions. Thankfully, the developers responded to player feedback by implementing comprehensive changes to the game’s economy and progression system. As a result, the game is now in an excellent, much-improved state for any Star Wars fan to truly enjoy.

So there you have it – our curated list of the best Star Wars games available on PC, and indeed, some of our all-time favorite titles. Whether you can recite the Jedi Code backward from within a Sarlaac or you’d struggle to identify the business end of a bowcaster, we believe these are the essential Star Wars games every fan should experience.
