Windows 11 Gets a Massive AI Boost: Copilot Now Fully Integrated for Everyone

Microsoft has just unveiled a massive artificial intelligence upgrade for Windows 11, embedding its native AI assistant, Copilot, deeply into the operating system. This exciting update promises to streamline everyday tasks for users. The best part? You won’t need a special AI-powered PC to experience these new Copilot features. Microsoft confirms that every Windows 11-compatible device will automatically transform into an ‘agentic OS,’ bringing advanced AI capabilities to a wider audience.

Bringing Copilot to Every Windows 11 User

In a recent newsroom update, the tech giant shared its ambitious vision for Windows 11. Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer at Microsoft, stated, “We are making the most powerful AI more accessible by integrating it into the Windows experiences people are already using every day.”

This integration involves a server-based version of Copilot within Windows 11, meaning that even devices without local AI processing power can now tap into these advanced features.

Microsoft is rolling out this integration in three distinct ways: First, a conversational interface for natural text and voice interactions. Second, Copilot Vision, which allows the AI to ‘see’ and assist with content on your screen. And third, agentic capabilities, enabling the AI assistant to perform actions on your behalf. Microsoft emphasizes that all these features are opt-in and come with robust security measures.

To enhance this seamless experience, new voice commands have been introduced to activate Copilot. Simply say “Hey Copilot” to get started. Ending your interaction is just as simple: say “Goodbye,” click the ‘X’ button, or let voice mode idle for a few minutes.

Copilot Vision is now broadly available in all markets where the AI chatbot operates. This powerful tool offers “full desktop” and “app sharing” modes, allowing the assistant to gain deeper context by accessing your entire device or specific applications and folders.

The handy ‘Highlights’ feature is also live, enabling users to share an app with Vision and ask “show me how” questions. Furthermore, text interaction with Copilot Vision is coming soon, expanding beyond its current voice-only support.

Looking ahead, Microsoft is set to preview even more AI features through its Windows Insider Program. A notable addition is the ‘Ask Copilot on the taskbar’ feature, an opt-in option that provides instant, one-click access to Copilot Vision and Voice directly from your taskbar. This feature leverages the existing Windows application programming interface (API) to retrieve user apps, files, and settings, much like an enhanced Windows Search.

Hey Copilot! Show everyone how we’re transforming how you interact with your Windows PC — so you can talk naturally, it can see what you see, and take action on your behalf.

One of the most significant upcoming features is Copilot Actions. This agentic capability will empower the chatbot to execute tasks on behalf of the user. While a version already exists within the Edge browser, this new iteration will extend its ability to perform actions across the entire Windows device.

“Whether you need a hand sorting through your recent vacation photos or need to extract info from a PDF, Copilot Actions can do the heavy lifting for you based on the context of what’s on your PC,” Mehdi explained. Microsoft plans to introduce a limited set of initial use cases to thoroughly test and optimize this powerful new functionality.

Lastly, Microsoft is developing Copilot connectors, currently accessible to Windows Insiders. These connectors enable users to link various third-party data hubs, including OneDrive, Outlook, Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Calendar. Once connected, Copilot can access this integrated data to provide more comprehensive and personalized answers to user queries.
