After some initial confusion stemming from a developer interview, Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios have now provided crystal-clear details on how cross-play will function in the highly anticipated Battlefield 6, particularly concerning console players.
Previously, a statement from Battlefield Studios suggested that ‘console-only cross-play happens if you turn it off,’ implying that disabling cross-play would result in lobbies exclusively populated by console users, without any PC players. This statement sparked some questions among the community.
A gameplay video showcasing 20 minutes of Battlefield 6 Operation Firestorm was also featured alongside this announcement, offering a glimpse into the action.
However, an EA spokesperson has now elaborated on these mechanics. They clarified that when console cross-play is enabled, the game will prioritize matching players with other console users, though this isn’t a strict guarantee. For those who prefer a truly platform-exclusive experience, there’s a specific ‘Cross-play Off’ option.
Interestingly, PC players will find cross-play active by default with no option to disable it. Below are the official descriptions of the two available cross-play settings, as outlined by EA:
Cross-play ON
- For console players, activating cross-play will prioritize matching you with other console-only players. However, expect to potentially join a broader matchmaking pool that includes players from all platforms. For PC players, this setting is always active and cannot be changed.
Cross-play OFF
- Choosing this option means you’ll only compete against players on your exact platform (e.g., Xbox players only match with other Xbox players, PlayStation with PlayStation). Note that forming parties with friends on different platforms will not be possible with this setting.
Battlefield 6 is set to launch on October 10 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Additionally, a battle royale mode is currently under development and might be released as early as October 28, offering even more ways to engage in large-scale combat.
