In an inspiring display of life’s possibilities, Dr. John Levin, an Australian doctor now aged 93, has become a father for the third time. He and his 37-year-old wife, Dr. Yanying Lu, joyfully welcomed their son, Gabby, in February 2024. This heartwarming news, reported by news.com.au, comes shortly after Dr. Levin’s eldest son, Greg, passed away at the age of 65.
Dr. Levin, who practices general medicine and specializes in anti-aging medicine, found love again after the passing of his wife of 57 years. Seeking to overcome loneliness, he embarked on learning Mandarin, a journey that led him to Dr. Lu, who became his teacher.
Their relationship blossomed quickly, as recounted by Dr. Lu. Initially, Dr. Levin was a “terrible student,” prompting Dr. Lu to suggest he stop lessons to avoid wasting his money. However, their connection grew through continued meetings, leading to a dinner invitation from Dr. Levin and a subsequent marriage in Las Vegas in 2014.
The couple decided to start a family during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Dr. Lu shared that this period of introspection led her to realize her desire for a child, a way to keep a part of Dr. Levin with her should she lose him. Gabby was conceived using donor sperm and IVF, with Dr. Lu becoming pregnant on their first attempt.
Dr. Levin described the moment he first held his newborn son as “unbelievable.” Dr. Lu playfully described her husband as an “old-fashioned” father who doesn’t change diapers. She also noted the common surprise from strangers who often mistake Dr. Levin for their son’s grandfather. “But for us, it’s about the choices that make us happy. We can’t control how other people feel,” she remarked.
Despite his advanced age, Dr. Levin harbors hopes of witnessing his son’s major life milestones, including his bar mitzvah and 21st birthday.
