Kenya mourns the passing of Raila Odinga, a monumental figure in its political landscape. The former prime minister, who at 80 years old, passed away during a visit to India, as confirmed by a local hospital and a former campaign adviser. Odinga’s remarkable career included five presidential bids, though none were ultimately successful.
In the 1990s, Odinga was instrumental in ushering in multiparty democracy for Kenya, a cause he championed following several periods of detention without trial. He served both within government and as a prominent opposition leader, embodying a persistent force for change.
His departure creates a significant vacuum in Kenyan politics, given his consistent role as the primary challenger to successive administrations. However, in the immediate future, his death may inadvertently consolidate the position of President William Ruto, who is preparing for his re-election campaign in 2027.
Devamatha Hospital in Kerala, located in southern India, issued a statement via telephone confirming Odinga’s death on Wednesday. He reportedly collapsed during his morning walk.
Ben Agina, who served as a senior adviser during Odinga’s 2022 election campaign, also corroborated the news of his passing.
“This is a truly somber day for all of us,” Mr. Agina expressed over the phone, as he made his way to Odinga’s Nairobi home to pay his respects. “His death has created a profound political division. The path ahead appears uncertain, and this will be a tremendous loss, especially for his political party.”
Kenyan media outlets anticipate a statement from President Ruto later on Wednesday. It is also expected that Odinga’s elder brother, Oburu Odinga, a serving senator, will address the public.
In Kisumu, Odinga’s political stronghold in western Kenya, thousands of citizens took to the streets. Demonstrating their grief, many waved tree branches, while others sounded whistles and honked car and motorbike horns.
“Raila’s passing signifies the loss of a true hero,” remarked Jacob Otieno Akach, a 75-year-old resident of Kisumu. “His unwavering commitment to development and democracy is undeniable, and his legacy will endure far beyond his lifetime.”
