Mia Goth, known for her role in Frankenstein, has expressed her support for Marvel’s decision to repeatedly postpone its highly anticipated Blade reboot. She believes the ongoing delays and script retooling are ultimately “for the best.”
Goth confirmed her continued involvement in the project during an interview with Elle this week, despite the lengthy wait for the film to begin production. Marvel first announced the new Blade film in 2019, with Mahershala Ali set to portray the iconic vampire hunter, a character previously brought to life by Wesley Snipes. Yet, over six years later, filming has yet to commence. At one point, production was so close that a full wardrobe of costumes for supporting artists was created, only to be later sold off.
“It’s for the best that it’s taken the time that it has,” Goth explained, emphasizing Marvel’s commitment to quality. “They want to do it right.”
Reports from last year indicated Goth would play Lilith, Dracula’s daughter and a recurring Marvel character. An earlier script, set in the 1920s, would have seen Lilith confront Blade while seeking his daughter’s blood. However, Marvel has since stated its intention to set the new Blade film in the modern day, while still planning to retain Goth for the role.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige previously discussed the production’s challenges, noting that the Blade script has undergone “three or four” different versions, two of which were period pieces. “We didn’t feel confident that we could do that on Blade, and we didn’t want to do that to Mahershala and didn’t want to do that to us,” Feige clarified, explaining why the project faced repeated setbacks and rewrites.
Adding to the behind-the-scenes insights, Marvel TV boss Brad Winderbaum recently revealed that his team had to adjust their plans for the Marvel Zombies animated miniseries on Disney+. The show now features an entirely new alternate universe version of Blade, a pivot made because the series was initially developed with the expectation that a live-action Blade movie would have been released much earlier.
As for when fans can expect to see Blade on the big screen, it appears there’s still a considerable wait. Marvel’s immediate focus remains on its upcoming blockbusters, Avengers: Doomsday (due December next year) and Avengers: Secret Wars (December 2027). Following these, an X-Men reboot is reportedly a high priority. Consequently, many Marvel enthusiasts don’t anticipate the Blade film for several more years. In the meantime, Mia Goth has other projects lined up, including Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey next year and Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars: Starfighter in 2027.
