Capcom Considers Reversing Controversial Pay-Per-View Model for Major Esports Tournaments

Last month at the Tokyo Game Show, Capcom announced a new pay-per-view (PPV) model for its highly anticipated Capcom Cup and Street Fighter League esports tournaments. This revelation immediately ignited a furious response from the dedicated fighting game community, prompting Capcom to reconsider its approach.

In a recent statement, Capcom confirmed they are actively ‘reviewing pricing and related details.’ Fans can expect ‘updated information regarding the PPV broadcast, including final pricing and additional context’ to be shared next month.

A social media post from Capcom Fighters on October 10, 2025, invited fans to enter a lottery to purchase in-person tickets for CAPCOM CUP 12 and the Street Fighter League: World Championship 2025, both scheduled to take place at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.

The initial Tokyo Game Show announcement detailed a PPV cost of 4,000 yen (approximately $27 USD) for each individual livestream of the Capcom Cup finals on March 14, and the Street Fighter League finals the following day. A bundled option for both streams was also offered at a reduced price of 6,000 yen (around $40 USD). Traditionally, these events were streamed for free across Capcom Fighters’ Twitch and YouTube channels, often accompanied by exclusive in-game cosmetic items for purchase.

The widespread dissatisfaction with the new PPV model quickly gained traction on social media. Notably, Street Fighter 6 director Takayuki Nakayama publicly stated that ‘even the development team was surprised by this announcement’ and offered an apology for ‘any concern this may have caused.’

Street Fighter 6 is currently available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The game is in its third season of downloadable content, with the character Crimson Viper set to join the roster on October 15.
