The National Medical Commission (NMC) has once again revised the NEET UG 2025 seat matrix, bringing exciting news for aspiring medical students. The commission has significantly increased the number of MBBS seats for the upcoming academic year, adding a total of 9,075 new opportunities. However, 456 seats have also been removed due to ongoing court cases. Despite these removals, the total number of MBBS seats across India now stands at an impressive 1,26,600 for the 2025–26 academic session. This major revision will impact numerous states and institutions, including new approvals for medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh and other regions. Candidates preparing for counselling are strongly advised to meticulously review the updated matrix and adhere to the revised schedule released by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
New MBBS Seats Across States
The NMC’s approval of 9,075 additional MBBS seats is spread across various states, significantly boosting medical education infrastructure. In Andhra Pradesh, for instance, Santhiram Medical College in Nandyal has expanded its intake from 150 to 250 seats, while Anna Gowri Medical College and Hospital has received approval to commence with 150 new seats. Other states, including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, have also witnessed incremental increases in their MBBS intake capacity. This nationwide expansion is a strategic move to address the escalating demand for qualified medical professionals.
Seats Removed Due to Court Cases
While the overall seat count has risen, 456 seats have unfortunately been removed from the matrix due to existing legal disputes. A notable example includes the removal of 150 seats from Delhi’s Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research. These adjustments underscore the NMC’s commitment to regulatory compliance and judicial directives, ensuring that only legally sanctioned seats are available for the counselling process.
State-wise MBBS Admission Trends
The recent revisions highlight a clear trend: a growing number of seats are being added in newer or recently upgraded medical colleges, particularly concentrated in the southern and western regions of India. States like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra are at the forefront of this expansion, actively enhancing their medical education infrastructure to meet future healthcare demands.
Impact on NEET UG 2025 Counselling
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has responded to these changes by extending the choice-filling deadline for Round 3 to October 13, 2025. Candidates must log in to the official MCC website (mcc.nic.in) to submit their preferences. This updated seat matrix could significantly influence admission strategies, especially in states experiencing notable changes in seat allocation. All candidates are urged to carefully scrutinize the revised list to optimize their chances of securing a coveted MBBS admission. The NEET UG counselling process is currently in progress, and the MCC will soon publish the Round 3 seat allotment results on its official website.
