Get ready for more brutal fatalities and epic martial arts action! It’s now officially confirmed: a third Mortal Kombat movie is on its way!
The exciting news broke during a panel at New York Comic Con, focused on the upcoming Mortal Kombat II. Jeremy Slater, the talented screenwriter behind Mortal Kombat II, shared that he’s already deep into writing the script for the third installment.
“Our incredible partners at New Line and Warner Bros. are absolutely thrilled with this movie,” Slater revealed. “Their excitement and belief in the huge fanbase waiting for it are so strong that they’ve already brought me on board to begin crafting the next chapter.”
But before we jump ahead to Mortal Kombat III, mark your calendars for Mortal Kombat II. The highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 film is slated for release on May 16, 2026. This date was actually pushed back from its initial fall 2025 schedule.
Director Simon McQuoid explained the delay at NYCC, humorously calling the film a “victim of its own success.” This echoes sentiments he expressed over the summer, after witnessing the overwhelmingly positive reactions during test screenings.
“Every time audiences have seen this movie, it has just gained incredible momentum,” McQuoid stated. “We’ve truly created a massive summer blockbuster. We should all be proud that the Mortal Kombat movie and franchise will be kicking off next summer’s cinematic season. Yes, we have to wait a little longer, but it’s going to feel absolutely massive, and that’s precisely why.”
Joining Slater and McQuoid at the lively panel were stars Karl Urban (Johnny Cage), Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), Tati Gabrielle (Jade), and Martyn Ford (Shao Kahn). This new talent is joining an already impressive returning cast from the first movie, including Lewis Tan, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jessica MacNamee, Joe Taslim, and many more.
