In a significant development for international defense cooperation, the U.S. has finalized an agreement with Qatar to establish a new air force training facility. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that the facility will be located at the Mountain Home Airbase in Idaho, U.S.
This initiative is designed to provide comprehensive training for Qatari pilots on operating F-15 fighter jets, a crucial step in bolstering Qatar’s aerial defense capabilities. Secretary Hegseth emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “It’s just another example of our partnership.” He made these remarks during a meeting with his Qatari counterpart, Minister of Defense Saoud bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, at the Pentagon.
Hegseth also acknowledged Qatar’s vital role in mediating efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitate the return of hostages. He commended the nation for its “substantial role” in these complex diplomatic negotiations.
The establishment of the Idaho facility is expected to enhance joint training exercises, thereby increasing the combined operational readiness and lethality of both air forces. While specific details regarding the number of Qatari F-15s to be stationed or the facility’s operational timeline were not disclosed, the agreement signifies a deepening of the strategic alliance between the U.S. and Qatar.
This development follows a recent executive order signed by President Trump, which pledges U.S. military support for Qatar, underscoring the robust security pact between the two countries. Qatar is already a key U.S. ally, hosting the significant al-Udeid Air Base, the U.S. military’s primary hub for air operations in the Middle East.
