Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have officially announced ‘A Minecraft Movie 2’, with its theatrical release slated for July 23, 2027. This news comes as no surprise, given the monumental success of the original film. Released in April 2025, the first ‘Minecraft Movie’ grossed over $950 million worldwide, solidifying its place as the second highest-grossing video game adaptation ever and the 69th highest-grossing film of all time across all genres.
Following the first film’s release, executives at Warner Bros. had hinted that a sequel was almost a certainty, pending the finalization of deals. Their confidence proved well-founded.
Director Jared Hess expressed his excitement to Deadline, calling the prospect of making a sequel ‘so much fun’. He highlighted the vast and expansive nature of the Minecraft world, which offers endless opportunities for new storylines and elements that couldn’t be explored in the first movie. “There were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to,” Hess explained, noting the enthusiastic fan reaction to hints in the end credits. “The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.”
The sequel is expected to delve deeper into the character of Alex, who was briefly introduced at the conclusion of the first film. Hess also mentioned that Alex would likely be joined by Jack Black’s character, Steve, for their next adventure.
