Given the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s quite surprising how many players haven’t yet experienced the iconic predecessors. I understand why: older games can be tricky to run on modern systems, some mechanics might feel a bit dated, and the visuals aren’t as cutting-edge. Plus, no bear romance! However, both original Baldur’s Gate titles are truly fantastic role-playing games in their own right, offering a rich dive into the Dungeons & Dragons universe. The great news is, Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 are now available on Game Pass, making these classic fantasy adventures more accessible than ever before.
This exciting announcement follows closely on the heels of Microsoft’s recent Game Pass price adjustments. While new day-one releases are now exclusive to the priciest tier (now $29.99 / £22.99 monthly), the original Baldur’s Gate games, being cherished classics rather than new titles, will be available across all but the most basic Game Pass subscriptions.
Despite Game Pass’s impressive library of high-quality titles, these recent price increases, some up to $10 / £8 a month, have unfortunately prompted many players to cancel their subscriptions. It’s understandable that a service once lauded for its affordability in accessing new and classic games now feels out of reach for some.
Nevertheless, October’s lineup proves that subscribers still have a fantastic array of titles to look forward to, whether they’ve maintained their current subscription or opted for a lower tier. The month begins with the arrival of the first two Baldur’s Gate titles and Supermarket Simulator for Game Pass Premium and Ultimate members. Later in October, both tiers will welcome The Casting of Frank Stone, The Grinch: Christmas Adventures, Pax Dei, and Evil West. Additionally, Ultimate subscribers can anticipate exciting new releases such as Ninja Gaiden 4, Ball x Pit, and Keeper.
While the decision to continue your subscription is personal, I wholeheartedly advocate for the enduring quality of both original Baldur’s Gate games. Featuring robust systems and memorable characters, these RPGs have truly stood the test of time. It’s the perfect opportunity to reunite with beloved companions like Minsc and Jaheira, cast powerful fireballs at pesky kobolds, and fully immerse yourself in classic role-playing adventures.
Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2 are available starting today, Thursday, October 9, for Game Pass Premium and Ultimate subscribers.
If this news has sparked your desire for more role-playing adventures but you’ve opted out of Game Pass, consider exploring some fantastic fantasy games available elsewhere. Alternatively, you might find that certain Baldur’s Gate 3 mods can capture a similar classic feel.
