Former US President Donald Trump has announced a significant development in the Gaza conflict, stating that both Israel and Hamas have “signed off” on the first stage of a peace plan. In a post on Truth Social, Trump indicated that this agreement would pave the way for the swift release of all hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli troops to a pre-determined line, marking the initial steps towards a “Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace.”
This declaration follows three days of intensive indirect negotiations held in Egypt, with mediation efforts involving officials from Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States, all aimed at de-escalating the two-year conflict. Both Israeli and Hamas officials have also confirmed that an agreement has been reached.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed optimism, calling it a “great day” and announcing plans to convene the government to ratify the deal and secure the return of hostages. Hamas confirmed that the agreement includes the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and an exchange of hostages for prisoners. The group urged guarantor countries and other Arab nations to ensure Israel fully implements the terms of the agreement.
A senior White House official suggested that the release of hostages could begin as early as Monday. The Qatari Foreign Minister, Majed al-Ansari, also confirmed the agreement would lead to the end of the war, the exchange of hostages and prisoners, and the facilitation of aid into Gaza. Earlier, speculation about an imminent deal grew when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio handed Trump a note during an event, reportedly suggesting progress in the peace talks. Trump later stated the note indicated they were “very close to a deal.”
The report also touched upon the ongoing humanitarian situation in Gaza, noting a recent decrease in reported casualties and ongoing efforts to deliver aid. The ongoing conflict, which began after the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant loss of life and a severe humanitarian crisis in the region.
