Tragic news emerged from Madrid today as a six-storey building, undergoing significant renovation, partially collapsed in the city center. The incident has resulted in the deaths of four individuals, with emergency services confirming the recovery of the final two missing persons on Wednesday morning. The collapse occurred on Hileras Street, sending shockwaves through the community.
Among the victims were a 30-year-old Spanish woman, who was reportedly overseeing the project, and three male workers from Mali, Guinea, and Ecuador, aged between 30 and 50. Three other individuals sustained injuries in the disaster. The building, a former office block, was in the process of being converted into a hotel. An official investigation into the cause of the collapse has been launched.
Rescue teams, equipped with drones and sniffer dogs, worked tirelessly for over 15 hours in a desperate search for those trapped. Two bodies were initially recovered on Tuesday night, with the remaining two found on Wednesday morning. Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida expressed his condolences, stating, “All our love and support go to their families, friends, and colleagues in this very difficult time.”
One construction worker, who was outside the building at the time of the collapse, described the harrowing experience, recounting a sudden rush of dust as the structure gave way. The building’s facade, remarkably, remained standing despite the catastrophic internal failure.
