Farhan Akhtar on Dil Chahta Hai Debut: Reflecting on Youthful Advice and Upcoming Roles

Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut, Dil Chahta Hai (2001), remains a touchstone for a generation, capturing the essence of friendship and the complexities of growing up. This iconic film also marked a significant moment for Akhtar himself, as he embarked on his directorial journey with a cast of established actors, including Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna.

Reflecting on the experience, Akhtar recalled the trust placed in him: “They took a chance on a 25-year-old with a script and no idea of how to produce a film.” This leap of faith holds a special place in his heart, as he stated, “It gave me this life.” Looking back at his younger self, Akhtar admitted to often getting stressed and shared what he’d tell his 25-year-old self: “I’d tell myself to enjoy the journey a little more.”

Following the success of Dil Chahta Hai, Akhtar’s career has flourished with notable films such as Rock On!! (2008), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), Fukrey (2013), and Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023), each showcasing his evolving directorial vision.

Turning 50 and Looking Ahead

Celebrating his 50th birthday last year, a milestone also acknowledged by his wife Shibani Dandekar (whom he married in 2022), Akhtar shared a lighthearted perspective on aging: “I feel like I should start behaving like I’m 50, although I don’t know what that is. I’m just continuing down the path.”

On the professional front, Farhan is preparing for the release of 120 Bahadur this November. The film draws inspiration from the pivotal Battle of Rezang La during the 1962 Indo-China war, highlighting the extraordinary bravery of 120 Indian soldiers from the 13 Kumaon Battalion. Despite facing overwhelming odds and suffering heavy casualties, their valiant stand halted the Chinese advance. Portraying Major Shaitan Singh, the battalion commander, Akhtar emphasized the profound responsibility of the role, noting, “People like Shaitan Singhji are made of a very different metal, jis mitti se bane hain woh ek alag mitti hai (the soil they’re made of is not like any other).”
