Atomfall’s Latest DLC Unleashes Robotic Companions and Gory Fun

When the initial trailer for The Red Strain, Atomfall’s second major DLC, first surfaced, my curiosity was definitely piqued. It showcased some new robotic adversaries (though visually similar to those we’ve encountered before) and a fresh strain of mutated fungus, but not much else. For a fan of Rebellion’s unique survival game set in the post-apocalyptic Lake District, that alone is usually enough to draw me back in. However, the *actual* launch trailer has me buzzing with excitement, and it’s all thanks to one incredible, previously downplayed feature: robot companions!

Let’s be honest, what’s good sci-fi without a trusty robot sidekick? Whether they’re friendly, perpetually annoyed, or hilariously depressed, iconic bots like C3PO, R2D2, the Iron Giant, K-9, and Marvin have proven that mechanical companions are essential. If your favorite sci-fi saga lacks one, I’m afraid to tell you, it’s missing something special.

(A thrilling gameplay video was shown here, highlighting the new robot companion mechanics and action.)

Honestly, I never thought I needed a robot pal in Atomfall. I was content exploring the ravaged Lake District, battling both living and mechanical threats on my own. Survival is, after all, a core tenet of the best survival games, and I hadn’t considered delegating my “dirty work” to anyone, let alone a machine. But the latest trailer for The Red Strain DLC changes everything. It reveals you can now hack Atomfall’s formidable robots, using a remote control to bend them to your will! I suspect this is a temporary alliance, as a flamethrower-wielding robot sidekick throughout the entire DLC might be a tad overpowered—unless, of course, the enemy scaling has been cranked up to match!

Beyond the exciting new companions, it looks like there’s an infested rocket launch event to contend with, where players will either need to sabotage or secure its safe departure. The DLC also brings a host of balance updates and fixes, benefiting all players, regardless of whether they own The Red Strain. A particularly noteworthy update is the increased gore: expect even more satisfying blood effects when you connect with a cricket bat or police truncheon!

(An in-game screenshot here depicted a player battling alongside a newly recruited robot companion.)

The Atomfall: The Red Strain DLC is available now for purchase. If you’re a fan of Atomfall’s unique blend of survival and RPG elements, or just love a good open-world adventure, this new expansion offers plenty to sink your teeth into. We’re curious to know: have you ventured into The Red Strain yet? What are your thoughts on the new robot companions and other additions? Share your experiences and join the conversation!
