An alarming event unfolded in Delhi’s court proceedings when a lawyer, identified as Rakesh Kishore, threw a shoe at Chief Justice BR Gavai. The incident, which is being treated as a significant breach of security and a public insult, is believed to stem from remarks the Chief Justice made concerning Hinduism.
Eyewitnesses, including three lawyers present in the courtroom, confirmed the shoe grazed the Chief Justice and another justice before falling behind them. As he was being escorted away by security, Mr Kishore was reportedly heard exclaiming, “India won’t tolerate insult to Sanatan Dharma [Hinduism].” He has since been suspended from his legal practice.
Justice Gavai, demonstrating remarkable composure, reportedly asked lawyers to continue their proceedings without disruption. While the Chief Justice has not issued a public statement on the matter, authorities have indicated that no charges will be filed against Mr Kishore.
The precise remarks that incited the lawyer’s action remain unclear, though media reports suggest a connection to a recent petition dismissal. During that proceeding, Chief Justice Gavai had commented on the Hindu deity Vishnu, which some found offensive, leading to criticism and accusations of disrespect towards Hindu beliefs. Justice Gavai had previously stated his respect for all religions.
