Munich Airport has been forced to suspend flights for the second time within a single day following further reports of suspected drone activity near its airspace. The airport announced the suspension of services on Friday evening at 21:30 local time, affecting approximately 6,500 travelers. This follows a similar incident on Thursday evening, which led to the grounding of at least 17 flights due to drone sightings.
These events are part of a growing trend of drone-related disruptions affecting European aviation. Authorities in Belgium are also investigating sightings of multiple drones near the German border. While the origin and operators of these drones remain unidentified, German officials are considering new legislation to empower police to shoot down unauthorized drones.
The issue is gaining significant attention at the European level, with discussions planned among interior ministers to address drone security and potential coordinated responses. The incidents highlight the increasing challenges posed by unmanned aerial vehicles to air traffic safety and national security.
