The Halo TV series, initially canceled by Paramount+, has astonishingly found a thriving new audience on Netflix, quickly rising to become one of the streaming platform’s most-watched programs.
Its first season launched in March 2022, but the show faced significant challenges from the start. Paramount+ never disclosed detailed viewership figures, but it was clear the series hadn’t met expectations, leading to its cancellation after two seasons.
However, upon its recent arrival on Netflix, Halo has surged in popularity, rapidly becoming one of the platform’s most-viewed series. It now proudly holds a top spot on the U.S. chart for TV shows.

Many fans will remember the significant debate sparked when Master Chief removed his helmet in the series—a departure from the game franchise’s decades-long tradition. Actor Pablo Schreiber, who portrays Master Chief, firmly defended this creative choice. He explained that those who felt the helmet shouldn’t have been removed had an ‘early conception of what the show could be.’ Schreiber added, ‘To truly explore the nuances between these two versions of the character, Chief and John-117, you simply cannot tell that story without taking the helmet off. If you disagree with this artistic decision, then frankly, you won’t enjoy our show, and there’s no further point in discussing it.’

The journey to bring a Halo TV series to life was extensive, with development stretching back to 2013, though filming only commenced in 2019. The cast featured Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, supported by Natascha McElhone, Jen Taylor, Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Natasha Culzac, Olive Gray, Yerin Ha, Bentley Kalu, Kate Kennedy, Charlie Murphy, and Danny Sapani. Kyle Killen and Steven Kane served as showrunners for the first season, with David Wiener taking the lead for the second.
Despite its current popularity surge, Season 2 of Halo received a modest 6/10 rating from IGN. Their review stated, ‘Even with improvements over its predecessor, Halo Season 2 remains uninspired and merely functional, offering little appeal beyond its action sequences.’
Halo’s trajectory on streaming platforms mirrors a broader trend: many video game adaptations are finding immense success. For instance, Prime Video’s Fallout series was a phenomenal hit, and HBO Max’s The Last of Us shattered viewership records.
