September 2025 proved to be a pivotal period for India’s automotive sector, marked by the implementation of GST 2.0 and the commencement of the festive season. The month presented a diverse set of outcomes: some manufacturers capitalized on tax benefits and heightened festive demand to achieve record sales, while others struggled, particularly with their entry-level vehicle segments. This period also witnessed significant shifts in overall market standings. Here’s a detailed look at how the major mass-market Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) fared during September.

September 2025 Car Sales: Maruti retains top spot, another brand surges to second!

Key Performance Highlights: September 2025

Leading the pack once again, Maruti Suzuki India reported total sales of 189,665 units. Their export figures were particularly impressive, reaching an all-time high of 42,204 units, a robust 52% increase year-over-year. Domestically, however, passenger vehicle sales saw an 8% decline to 132,820 units, largely due to reduced demand in the entry-level car and utility vehicle segments. Despite this, Maruti saw a significant boost from early festive purchases, recording 1.65 lakh deliveries during the initial week of Navratri, setting a positive tone for October.

The undisputed highlight of September was Tata Motors, which achieved its best-ever monthly sales performance. The Indian automotive powerhouse sold an impressive 60,907 cars, marking a significant 47% surge compared to the previous year. The Nexon model was a major contributor, hitting a record 22,500+ units, making it the highest-selling individual Tata model in a single month. Furthermore, electric vehicle (EV) sales almost doubled to 9,191 units, and CNG vehicle sales surpassed 17,800 units, showcasing broad-based growth.

Mahindra & Mahindra also reported strong numbers, with overall sales increasing by 16% year-over-year to 100,298 units. Utility vehicles were a key driver, representing 56,233 units of these sales, a 10% increase. Exports for Mahindra also saw substantial growth, rising by 43% to 4,320 units.

Hyundai Motor India enjoyed a successful September, with total sales reaching 70,347 units, a 10% increase over the previous year. Domestic sales accounted for 51,547 units. SUVs proved to be Hyundai’s powerhouse, contributing a record 72.4% of total sales. The popular Creta model achieved its highest-ever monthly sales at 18,861 units, while the Venue reached a 20-month high with 11,484 units sold. Exports were also robust, climbing 44% year-on-year to 18,800 units.

Several other manufacturers also posted positive results. Toyota Kirloskar Motor delivered 31,091 units, a 16% increase from the previous year. Kia India sold 22,700 units, showing a nearly 16% growth compared to August. JSW MG Motor India also demonstrated strong performance, with 6,728 units sold, marking a 34% rise year-on-year.

Nissan Motor India achieved a total sales volume of 10,500 units in September 2025, reflecting a 9.3% year-on-year growth. Domestic sales stood at 1,652 units, while exports were a significant contributor with 8,872 units. Impressively, South Asia recorded its highest-ever shipments for Nissan, reaching 1,120 units.

Conversely, Honda Cars India experienced a challenging month, with sales declining by 26% to 8,096 units. Domestic volumes were recorded at 5,303 units, and exports contributed 2,793 units.

This comprehensive overview reveals the competitive and dynamic nature of the Indian automotive market in September 2025, with a mix of strong performances and areas of decline among key players.
